On the Road, Everglades

On the Road, Everglades

Softcover paperback English 96 pages 17 × 23.5

Description

Since the mid-1990s Bert Teunissen has photographed the landscape while on the road, always in the same way: shot from behind the steering wheel while driving. This publication focuses on the dense American landscape of the Everglades in Florida. The method is consistent, and the book presents the results of that approach applied to one specific place.

Teunissen uses an Olympus Pen, the half-frame camera from the 1960s and 1970s. All photographs are printed on out-of-date photographic paper stock, creating different flares in colours and contrasts, which makes every print unique and impossible to create again. For Teunissen this irreversible process is part of his search to capture the fluid state of mind while traveling. The book’s subject is therefore both the Everglades and the act of looking while in motion.

The volume is 17 by 23.5 centimetres, 96 pages, in softcover, with five colours. Design is by Hans Gremmen. Bert Teunissen is the photographer; Hans Gremmen is credited with the design. The book was published in 2017 by Fw:Books.

For readers, the interest lies in the connection between a repeatable rule and an unpredictable material process. The viewpoint behind the steering wheel remains constant, but the landscape passes and the expired photographic paper responds unevenly. The unique objects described by the publisher are the photographic prints, not individually different copies of the book. In this edition, those results are reproduced through five-colour printing. The book brings the changing experience of travel into a sequence that can be revisited, allowing a reader to examine what the passing encounter might otherwise leave behind.
