Malparaíso

Clothbound hardback hardcover English 160 pages 30 × 24

Description

Setanta Books published JM Ramirez-Suassi’s *Malparaíso* in 2024 as a first edition clothbound hardback of 160 pages, with 81 images. The book’s title names an imaginary place—a lost Eden that, as an artifice, must consolidate a “place” forming part of the creative experience. Its photographs, in a course without precise coordinates or compasses, cross invisible borders and stretch in all directions, calling out to one another and connecting into a web of landscapes, human beings and curiosities. The world, seen only in fragments, sows alarm signals until the book is tinged with a vague melancholy.

Exploring the classic motif of paradise, Ramirez-Suassi describes a journey as broad as it is personal, in which racism, identity, migration, nature under siege, violence and precariousness appear as firm guiding threads. His images, he writes, suggest rage and pain but also express beauty, hope and humanity as part of a complex reality. The publisher frames the sequence as a tableau vivant of delirious idleness and a subtle allegory of lethargy.

Physically, the volume measures 300 by 240 mm. A special edition with prints also exists: each print is in an edition of 20 numbered and stamped copies, signed by Ramirez-Suassi on verso and printed on Hahnemühle Pearl paper at 28 by 22 cm with a 0.5 cm white border. These specifications position the book within contemporary photographic publishing attentive to landscape, migration and belonging.
