Description

“There is a Big River…” takes its title from a sentence that keeps opening inward: a river containing an island, a lake inside that island, another island, a small house, and a life growing in a womb. András Ladocsi’s book, published by Void in Athens in 2024, borrows that nesting logic for a photographic sequence he began in 2015.

Ladocsi, Hungarian-born and based in Paris, works across photography and film. The series looks closely at skin, bodies, gender, friendship and trust — intimacy examined rather than staged for effect. Water runs through the pictures, and so does the sense that people are shaped by the places they inhabit; the book frames its subject as connectedness, with all the ups and downs that word can carry.

At 88 pages in paperback, the volume reads less as a survey than as a sustained argument about order and adjacency. Two further contributors, João Linneu and Myrto Steirou, are credited without specified roles; both founded Void in Athens in 2016, so the house’s own sensibility is present in how the material is framed. Booksellers describe a silkscreened cover that gives the object a deliberately tactile finish.

Nothing here rests on claims of scarcity — the book is simply carried by specialist photobook sellers across Europe and Asia. Its interest for a collection lies elsewhere: in a photographer working the difficult line between tenderness and formal control, and in an independent publisher giving a long-gestating project a considered shape. It rewards being read as a whole, for the way one image sets up the next.
