Let's Be Reasonable

Description

Let’s Be Reasonable collects written pieces by Joel Sartore—some of them aired on CBS News Sunday Morning, others published here for the first time—and pairs each with his photographs. The arrangement is deliberate: the book treats words and images as equal partners rather than placing pictures in service of a caption.

The subjects are wide-ranging, as the title suggests. Sartore has reported on everything from mud to money, from holiday trash to cancer, and his assignments have taken him from the Amazon to Alaska, from wildlife refuges to state fairs. That breadth is the point. A photographer for National Geographic for two decades and a contributor to CBS News Sunday Morning since 2005, Sartore has built a practice around the interplay of reporting and seeing. Let’s Be Reasonable is the first book to gather this side of his work.

The volume appeared in 2011 from the University of Nebraska Press, as part of its Great Plains Photography series, in a hardcover edition of 127 pages. Its scale is modest, and that suits the material. These are short-form essays with photographic accompaniment, not a retrospective monograph.

For a collector, the interest lies in what the book records: an established photographer working in a format that few of his later books share. The photographs are the award-winning work for which he is known, but the writing is the connective tissue, and some of it exists only here. Read alongside his larger projects, it shows a reporter’s curiosity and a photographer’s eye operating in the same frame.
