Harrodsburg

Harrodsburg

Clothbound hardback hardcover English 96 pages 30 × 22

Description

Harrodsburg examines the streets around Harrods in Knightsbridge as a meeting point for extraordinary wealth and everyday public life. Dougie Wallace directs his attention toward conspicuous consumption and the social world surrounding the department store. The photographs approach this London district through people and their visible habits, using the photographer’s attention to incongruity to question the glamour associated with the address.

The publisher places the project within a longer transformation of central London. Wealthy visitors from the Gulf arrived from the mid-1970s, followed by other groups whose purchasing power changed the property market. In this account, homes increasingly became financial assets, while residents with much smaller resources faced displacement. Wallace’s subject is therefore more than expensive shopping: the book connects appearances on the street with changes in who can afford to inhabit the city.

Cultural commentator Peter York contributes the introduction. His presence adds a written perspective to a photographic investigation of class, taste and public display. The project also became the focus of a 2017 BBC documentary following Wallace as he completed the pictures. These contexts help locate Harrodsburg within his continuing work on the behaviour and social contrasts visible in urban spaces.

Published by Dewi Lewis in 2017, the book is a clothbound hardback of 96 pages, with publisher dimensions of 300 by 220 millimetres. For readers interested in street photography, it offers a sharply defined setting in which humour and social observation meet. Its interest lies in how a small area of London can reveal the wider effects of concentrated wealth.
