New Horizons is a photobook by Dutch artist Bruno van den Elshout. On New Year’s Eve 2011, he set a camera-machine on the roof of a hotel on the beach in The Hague to photograph the North Sea horizon once every hour throughout 2012, producing 8,785 images. The book presents 500 of these pictures, rhythmically and melodically composed into a story without text. The horizon appears gray, grim, ordinary, wild, waving, sometimes tranquil and misty, unreal calm, or bombastically colorful, with skies reminiscent of The Hague School paintings of the late nineteenth century.
The project began as a seemingly random idea and grew through exhibitions and beach expeditions into a major work of art in book form. In the middle of an economic crisis, the horizon served as a stable and calming counterpart. The book reflects the adventure to which the horizon invited: how it arises, unfolds, and where it takes you, touching on courage, doubt, and discovery.
