Bron

Cahier with French folded cover paperback English 84 pages 23 × 29

Description

In 2018 Cape Town approached Day Zero, the date the city was expected to exhaust its water. Zindzi Zwietering spent two months there as the reservoirs fell. Bron, her 2022 book from the Dutch publisher Eriskay Connection, is not a straightforward record of that countdown. Its guiding question is why scarcity can be so hard to see: even residents who emptied their pools and rationed at home struggled to register the emergency around them.

Zwietering photographs the crisis at the scale of daily life, where dependence on water has become invisible. Her attention is less on catastrophe than on the conditions that keep a shortage abstract, and on the moment when a sight outside the city makes the scale of the failure plain. The work moves from one city to a wider condition, addressing a world in which roughly a quarter of the population faces extreme shortages. The book is a human study rather than an environmental survey, showing how large and diffuse forces press on ordinary routines.

Lize Swartz contributes research and writing, and Zwietering edited the book with Lyanne Tonk, who also designed it. The sequence, in a large-format cahier with a French folded cover, orders images, research, and text toward an argument about visibility and comprehension rather than toward reportage. Its design is central to this: the book wants to make a slow crisis legible on the page.

For collectors of contemporary documentary work, Bron is a considered rather than sensational entry in a growing body of photographic books about climate and urban water. Its subject, its measured sequencing, and its collaboration between photography, research, and design place it within current conversations about how the climate crisis can actually be pictured. Published with support from cultural funds, it shows a photographer extending the documentary form toward abstraction and the unseen.
