Family Stranger

Family Stranger

Japanese-bound hardcover hardcover English 232 pages 20 × 28

Description

What happens to a household when one of its members is sent to prison? Wiosna van Bon’s Family Stranger approaches that question through the families of detainees, people who must weigh, over a long and unsettled period, what their relationship to a convicted relative now is and whether they can live with it. Van Bon made the photographs; the narrative was constructed with Liza Szabó and Rob van Hoesel, and the book was designed by Van Hoesel and published by The Eriskay Connection in 2020.

The work does not treat the prisoner as its central figure. It stays with those outside the cell, whose lives continue while the detainee is held in what the publisher calls a kind of time capsule. The ethical pressure falls on them: how to judge an act and still hold on to a person, how to answer neighbours, schools, employers. Because the relative is often socially convicted alongside the offender, and because the subject is widely treated as taboo, these families can drift toward further isolation. Van Bon’s attention is to the varied accommodations and refusals through which they manage that risk.

At 232 pages, in a Japanese-bound hardcover, the book gives the subject room to unfold rather than reducing it to a handful of encounters. The sequence, credited to Van Bon, Szabó and Van Hoesel, and the binding itself — a format that opens fully and reads continuously — make the argument that these are slow, unfinished negotiations rather than dramatic events. Van Bon’s photographs of families operate as portraiture of a condition, not of a crime.

For a collector, the book’s claim lies in that conjunction of subject and making. It is a considered example of Dutch photobook practice, with design, lithography and printing handled by named specialists and with the narrative structure treated as a shared editorial problem rather than a photographer’s afterthought. Its subject, rarely given sustained photographic attention, and its refusal to sensationalise it, are reason enough to keep the book in view.
