Within the Bubble of Surroundings

Within the Bubble of Surroundings

Softcover with linen cap paperback English 144 pages 22.5 × 32

Description

Seppe Vancraywinkel’s Within the Bubble of Surroundings began with a group of boys in the countryside around Hoegaarden, Belgium, and the plains and creeks they were free to roam. Years later, scattered by adult lives, they reconvene; the book describes the space that forms when they are together—a bubble, in Vancraywinkel’s imagination, that holds off the clamour outside it. This is not a documentary about a place so much as an inquiry into what closeness looks like when it can no longer be taken for granted.

Working over several years, Vancraywinkel photographs the spontaneous moments in which that closeness becomes visible: gestures, pauses, and returns that carry both visual and emotional weight. The sequence follows a friendship that is changing and durable at once, and it lets ideas of time, space, adulthood, masculinity, and intimacy be renegotiated informally, even playfully, rather than argued. The title’s slightly awkward phrasing is worth keeping in mind—it suggests a shelter made of what is nearby, not an escape from it.

Eriskay Connection issued the book in 2023 at 225 × 320 mm, with 144 pages and a softcover fitted with a linen cap. Rob van Hoesel’s design gives the pictures room to breathe while holding them to a deliberate sequence; lithography, production, printing, and binding were handled by Sebastiaan Hanekroot, Jos Morree, Wilco Art Books, and Patist respectively. Photographer and designer are the credited contributors, and Vancraywinkel is responsible for the photographs throughout.

For collectors, the book’s interest lies in that collaboration and in the patience of its making. The large page and the considered production place the work within a recent European photobook practice that treats friendship and masculinity as serious subjects, without melodrama. It is a first edition of 1,000 copies.
