A Certain Logic of Expectations

A Certain Logic of Expectations

Classic hardcover hardcover English 144 pages 16 × 22

Description

Oxford usually arrives pre-composed: spires, cloisters, the choreography of privilege. Arturo Soto’s A Certain Logic of Expectations refuses that postcard. Working in the city over five years, the Mexican photographer turns his attention to the ordinary infrastructure of the place — its rooms, thresholds, shopfronts, waiting areas — and to the long divide between town and gown. The result is a counter-narrative assembled from spaces and objects rather than monuments, one that questions the visual authority the university has long claimed over how the city is seen and remembered.

The book’s loose thematic strands — home and homelessness, the shadow of Brexit, a strained local economy, the varied textures of the city’s neighbourhoods — are held together by an even, unhurried looking. Soto writes as well as photographs; his short texts record his experience of Oxford and his attraction to its history and myths, and they give the pictures a second register, argumentative rather than illustrative. Katie Brown edited the text, Rob van Hoesel designed the volume, and the resulting 144-page hardcover asks to be read as much as viewed.

What distinguishes the project is its refusal of easy judgment. Soto is not debunking Oxford so much as testing the established narratives of tradition, influence and power that cling to it. For collectors drawn to contemporary documentary practice that treats a familiar city as an unresolved problem, this is a considered and quietly rigorous example — attentive to class and economy, sceptical of inherited scenery, and confident enough to let writing and photography carry equal weight.
