Controversy addresses the long-standing debate regarding the ethical credibility of photojournalism, specifically focusing on Robert Capa’s famous Spanish Civil War image, The Falling Soldier. Through a scientific orographic analysis conducted by Professor J. M. Susperregui, the book suggests that the photograph was taken in a location far from the actual front lines, implying it was staged rather than a candid shot of death. Pinckers and Weerdmeester present an aesthetic and critical response to this debunking, questioning whether the loss of “authenticity” diminishes the image’s historical and cultural relevance. The book was produced on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at M HKA in Antwerp.
