Slip Me the Master Key

Exposed spine softcover with raw debossed cloth jacket hardcover English 168 pages 24.5 × 30.2

Description

In “Slip Me the Master Key,” Thomas Prior gathers two decades of photographic work into a single unsettling volume, and the result is less a retrospective than a diagnosis. The book moves between subjects that seem to have nothing to do with one another—the National Pyrotechnic Festival in Mexico, a quantum supercomputer, a morgue truck parked on a Manhattan street during the pandemic, empty Adderall vials, a cloned dog, a boxer caught mid-punch, a strip of Maldivian land slipping beneath the rising tide—and finds in them a shared temperature. What connects these pictures is not theme but atmosphere: the American uncanny, a cool and precise clarity that makes catastrophe look composed.

Prior’s method is deliberate and restrained. He works across commissioned and personal projects without announcing the seam, and his pictures carry a documentary plainness that never quite settles into neutrality. Objects and scenes are rendered with such sharp attention that they begin to feel like evidence, though the crime is never named. Placed in careful sequence, the photographs in this book accumulate into an argument about the present: that the large forces reshaping the world—technological, environmental, economic—show themselves most clearly in small, specific, often overlooked moments. The rising tide is the book’s quiet throughline, a figure for shifts that are gradual and irreversible.

This is Prior’s third monograph and his second with Loose Joints, following “Amen Break” (2020) and “Bomba” (2016). The publisher’s design—an exposed-spine softcover with a raw debossed cloth jacket, 168 pages and 86 color plates—gives the work a physical austerity suited to its subject. A text by Tobias Wolff and editing by Sarah Chaplin Espenon accompany the photographs. For collectors attuned to contemporary photography that engages the Anthropocene without sloganeering, this book warrants close attention, not because it announces its importance but because it withholds it, letting the images do the insisting.
