Cold Mountain is a photographic book by Michael Lange, published by Hartmann Books in 2021. The 136-page hardcover measures 24.5 × 32.6 cm and contains 52 color images. Text is by Michael Lange, with poems by Hanshan, Ikkyu, Ryokan, and Basho. The book includes a double foldout and is published in English, German, and partly Japanese. The title refers to the legendary 7th-century Chinese Zen monk and poet Hanshan, whose name means “Cold Mountain.”
Over six years Lange travelled through several regions of the French Alps, seeking solitude and waiting for changing weather and light. Mist, rain, snow and brief sunlight shape his views of the mountains. His project asks how a photograph can convey the experience of looking at a landscape, with the timing of an exposure becoming part of that inquiry. The poems link groups of photographs within the book, bringing the landscape sequence into conversation with writing about solitude. This combination of images and poetry reflects Lange’s longstanding interest in Zen Buddhism.
