24022022

Hardcover embossed hardcover German, English 172 pages 19 × 24.5

Description

“24022022” is a photobook by Frank Gaudlitz, published in 2025 by Hartmann Books. The title refers to 24 February 2022, the date of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The book belongs to Gaudlitz’s long-term photographic project on post-Soviet Russian society, which he has followed since 1988. The invasion prompted the photographer to open a new chapter in that work.

In 2022 and 2023, Gaudlitz traveled to Moldova, Georgia and Armenia, former Soviet republics that received large numbers of refugees. There he portrayed people who left their homelands, or who were considering it, and whose futures were uncertain. The book gathers intensive portraits and conversations, presenting them as a chronicle of this period. The publisher describes the photographs as an emphatic document that speaks of improvisation as a lasting condition and of the gap between social promises and the everyday reality of refugees in wartime.

The German-and-English edition is a hardcover, embossed, and measures 19 by 24.5 centimeters. It contains 172 pages and 42 illustrations, of which 33 are portraits. The design is by Sarah Thußbas, fastsieben, Berlin. An interview is also included. Exhibitions related to the project were held at the Museum Europäischer Kulturen in Berlin from 19 September 2025 to 1 March 2026, and are scheduled at the Kunstsammlung Jena from 27 June to 20 September 2026.
