After Nature: Ulrike Crespo Award | Stelios Kallinikou is a softcover publication from Hartmann Books, edited by Katharina Täschner for the C/O Berlin Foundation. The book presents the work of photographer Stelios Kallinikou, one of two artists honored with the After Nature. Ulrike Crespo Photography Prize. The prize is a joint project of the C/O Berlin Foundation and the Crespo Foundation in Frankfurt am Main. This publication documents Kallinikou’s project and reflects the prize’s focus on photographic and visual media work responding to the changing ecologies of our time. The volume contains 164 pages and 70 illustrations, measures 17 × 24 cm, and includes German and English texts.
Kallinikou’s project explores Akrotiri Salt Lake, a body of water that lies within a British military base in a British Overseas Territory on Cyprus and is part of a vital wetland habitat in the eastern Mediterranean, supporting numerous flora and fauna. Situated near some of Cyprus’s oldest archaeological sites, the lake becomes a focal point for interwoven time periods and for tensions between military exploitation, ecological fragility, and cultural heritage. Incorporating photography, film, and sculpture, the project examines relationships between land, borders, and sovereignty and invites reflection on colonial legacies at Europe’s outer edge.
The book’s texts are by Kathryn Yusoff, Stelios Kallinikou, and Katharina Täschner, distinguishing the contributing authors from the photographer. The publication is associated with exhibitions at C/O Berlin from 12 September 2026 to 3 February 2027 and at Crespo Open Space, Frankfurt, from 26 February to 23 May 2027. The design is by Naroska, Berlin. The third award cycle is in 2026, when Kallinikou and Susanne Kriemann are the two honored artists.
