Porto Tolle is a photographic book by Francesco Neri, published by Hartmann Books in 2024 with an essay by Jean-Paul Deridder. The Italian-and-English edition is staple bound, measures 30 × 27 cm, and runs to 36 pages, including 20 duotone illustrations. Its ISBN is 978-3-96070-109-5. The photographs were made with a large-format camera in Porto Tolle, at the eastern end of the River Po Delta, during several trips Neri took while working on another commission.
The publisher’s description notes that using a large-format camera requires a tripod and a deliberate pause before exposure, conditions reflected in the book’s calm, carefully composed images. Neri has said he is interested in how the dimension of the world changes when a person occupies and defines a space, and the publisher observes that the background of each image matters too: something can always stand behind a character, and the setting itself can be evocative. In these portraits, a figure may be photographed leaning against a fence or a wall, the gaze directed elsewhere, while the camera follows the movement.
Francesco Neri is the photographer; Jean-Paul Deridder is the author of the accompanying text. The publisher describes Neri as a professor of photography at the Institute for Graphic Design in Faenza and a member of the AA School of Architecture, London, and notes that for more than fifteen years he has worked on long-term photographic projects, particularly in portraiture, as well as landscape and interiors. The book presents a concentrated body of portraits made in a specific delta landscape.
