Turin Diary

Turin Diary

Softcover with flaps paperback English 96 pages 14 × 21

Description

Turin Diary is a volume in Peter Bialobrzeski’s City Diaries, a long-term project begun in 2013. The series asks whether a city’s preconception—formed from prejudice, personal observation, and media imagery—can be transformed into a specific image. This volume covers a single week, 10 to 16 February 2020, in a city associated with Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and Juventus. The publisher describes the German visitor being received with an Italian dinner and a cold beer. Text and photographs are by Bialobrzeski; the diary entries are his own, and he is both photographer and author here, not a separate essayist.

The method is deliberately level. According to the publisher, every City Diaries title shares the same format and page count; this volume is listed as 96 pages with 45 illustrations, 14 by 21 centimeters, English-language, with text by Bialobrzeski. That consistency is central to the project: read alongside volumes on Osaka or Unna, Wuhan or Wolfsburg, Bangkok or Athens, the equal treatment allows differences between places to surface. Bialobrzeski’s seemingly objectifying aesthetic is the instrument, and globalization is what he seeks to make visible. Recent history also presses on the work—Cairo cannot be read without the Arab Spring, Athens without the euro crisis—and the publisher notes that current political and social developments are reflected in the images and diary entries.

Hartmann Books published Turin Diary in 2024. The publisher lists physical details including softcover with flaps and a limited edition; cataloguer records vary, so binding details are best checked against the physical copy. The book’s significance lies in its place within a defined, ongoing series and in its sustained photographic and textual inquiry into how cities are seen and understood. No additional contributors, such as a separate essay author or translator, are listed by the publisher.
