Subjective Evidence presents the photographic project Barbara Probst began in 2000 and has continued since. The publisher describes the first work, exposure #1, as twelve-part: Probst photographed herself running on a Manhattan rooftop from twelve perspectives simultaneously. Later exposures have continued to place multiple cameras around a single situation, releasing their shutters at the same moment, so that the resulting frames present several viewpoints of one event. Across the book, the publisher notes, Probst has worked with themes including still life, street, nude, fashion, interior and portrait photography. The publisher describes exposure #189 as three-part and dealing with human bodies that have a sculptural appearance; ISBNDB, confirming the same work and ISBN, instead describes exposure #189 as two-part, an experiment with a completely unstaged situation in public space. This description notes the discrepancy without resolving it.
The book contains a catalogue raisonné of all 189 exposures produced to date, an overview of works from recent years, and installation views of past exhibitions. It accompanies a retrospective shown at Kunstmuseum Luzern (24 February–16 June 2024), the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati (27 September 2024–9 February 2025), and the Sprengel Museum Hannover (11 December 2024–9 March 2025).
The photographer is Barbara Probst. The texts are by Stefan Gronert, Fanni Fetzer and Kevin Moore, who, as the publisher states, discuss the topicality and impact of the themes addressed in her pictures. The book is published by Hartmann Books in a German/English edition: 164 pages, 359 illustrations, 28 × 28 cm, hardcover with dust jacket, designed by Martin Küchle, Nürnberg. ISBN 978-3-96070-108-8.
