Barbara Probst | The Moment in Space

Barbara Probst | The Moment in Space

Swiss brochure with large flaps English, French 120 pages 23.5 × 30

Description

Barbara Probst began as a sculptor, studying at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich before turning to photography at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Since 2000 she has built the ongoing series “Exposures,” in which a single moment is recorded by multiple cameras placed at different angles and distances from the same event or subject. The resulting images, linked in sequence, form an enigmatic drama that borrows from portrait, still life, landscape, and studio photography while exposing the artifacts of the photographic process itself. Probst’s project tests how we decipher reality when a moment is split across viewpoints.

This volume, published by Hartmann Books in 2019, gathers the series’ first emblematic work, Exposure #1, alongside the newest series made in 2018, Exposures #138, #139, and #140. Frédéric Paul, a curator at the Centre Pompidou, contributes an essay on the conceptual and theoretical background of the work, addressing Probst’s process of conceiving and creating the exposures as well as questions of installation, exhibition, and the viewer’s experience.

The book is co-published with Le Bal, Paris, on the occasion of an exhibition held there from May 9 to August 25, 2019. Its 120 pages include five foldouts and 158 illustrations, with text in French and English. The design is by Pierre Hourquet of Temple, Paris. The binding is a Swiss brochure with large flaps, and the dimensions are 23.5 by 30 centimeters. The sequence and the foldouts are not incidental: they allow the linked exposures to unfold in time, which is central to how the work is understood.

For collectors, the value lies in the coherent presentation of nearly two decades of a single evolving project, from its first exposure to the most recent series, supported by a curator’s essay and a considered design that treats the book as an extension of the work rather than a record of it.
