Dark Whispers

Dark Whispers

Clothbound, printed hardcover English, German 144 pages 24 × 32

Description

For more than a decade Beatrice Minda has treated the private interior as a register of public history. In Dark Whispers she turns to Myanmar, a country sealed off for years under military rule, and photographs houses and living spaces in cities and in remote regions alike. What she records is less architecture than residue: rooms where objects have sat untouched for decades, arrangements of representation that once answered to a vanished social world, and the uneasy gaps between that world and the present. An emptiness runs through these spaces, and the title’s whisper is closer to a memento mori than to nostalgia.

The book sets Minda’s recent photographs alongside historical images and short texts on the histories of individual houses, so that the British colonial period and its long consequences surface obliquely, in the fabric of domestic life rather than in declaration. A text by the Burmese poet Ko Ko Thett accompanies the sequence, and the volume appears in English and German. Hannah Feldmeier’s design gives the material a measured, archival pacing across 144 pages, with 50 photographs and 42 historical illustrations.

Minda, who lives and works in Berlin, has pursued this line of inquiry since at least Interior World, her series on Romania, and continued it in Iran: Interrupted; Dark Whispers has been underway since 2014 and was shown at Haus am Kleistpark in Berlin in 2021. The clothbound publication, at 24 by 32 centimeters, holds that long attention.

For collectors drawn to photography that reads the political through the domestic, the book’s interest lies in its method: the pairing of contemporary interiors with historical material, the refusal of easy documentation, and the collaboration with a poet whose language matches the photographs’ restraint. It is a considered work by a photographer with a sustained project, and it rewards slow, repeated looking.
