For more than a decade, Andrea Diefenbach has been photographing Moldova, the small republic pressed between Romania and Ukraine whose post-Soviet course has never quite settled. Realitatea gathers work from the rural regions, where daily life moves at its own tempo — patient, improvised, at odds with the political drama unfolding elsewhere. That drama is present, but refracted: facsimiles of Moldovan newspapers and analytical texts by Martin Sieg and Andrei Avram run alongside the photographs, situating the images within ten years of upheaval and stagnation. An interview Diefenbach conducts with Pawel Braila, Ovidio Tichindeleanu, Olga Ghilca and Nora Dorogan adds a further layer of local voice.
The photographs themselves resist the headline. Diefenbach’s compositions are calm, sometimes quietly funny, and attentive to the texture of ordinary rooms, roads and faces; her empathy never curdles into sentiment. Her subjects are not explained or exoticized. The sequencing lets the tempo of Moldovan everyday life set the pace, so the book reads less as reportage than as sustained acquaintance. Diefenbach works for magazines and organizations in Germany and internationally, has taught photography at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2016, and her work has been shown at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Folkwang Museum Essen, the Reiss Engelhorn Museum Mannheim and the Munich Stadtmuseum, among others. In 2024 she was granted the Dr. Erich Salomon Award by the German Photographic Society.
The publisher presents the book as her third, and the design by Hannah Feldmeier gives the newspaper insertions and photographic plates equal weight; the 184 pages hold some 80 illustrations. The German Photobook Award 2023 recognized the volume with its Silver Medal, an indication of how well its hybrid structure was received. Behind “Realitatea” — reality — sits a country still negotiating what that word means. For a collector attentive to how a photobook can carry political context without surrendering to it, this is an intelligent example: image and document kept in productive tension rather than resolved.
