Norderney Diary

Norderney Diary

softcover with flaps paperback English 96 pages 14 × 21

Description

Peter Bialobrzeski’s Norderney Diary records a week on the North Sea island, from 22 to 28 November 2019, beginning after a wet week on the mainland when the weather turned. The island opens under a softer light, and what greets him is not the expected expanse of beach and dune but a skyline: hotels, apartment blocks and promenades that carry the residue of a late-modernist faith in tourism. The book keeps that arrival in view throughout, attentive to a built fabric as legible as the shoreline.

The volume belongs to Bialobrzeski’s City Diaries, a long-term documentary project begun in 2013 and conceived as fifty volumes. Each instalment asks whether the image of a city we carry around—assembled from preconceptions, prior pictures and media representation—can be replaced by actual photographs. His method is deliberately even: a consistent, apparently objectifying visual language applied without drama, so that cultural differences between places, and whatever globalization has laid over them, become the subject rather than the backdrop. Norderney, a German island with a long tourist identity, is a pointed case, since the industry that shapes the town is also bound up with why it is photographed.

The diary form gives the book a compressed, diurnal rhythm that distinguishes it from more sweeping urban surveys. It runs to 96 pages with 45 illustrations, designed by Sarah Fricke of Distaff Studio, and appears as a softcover with flaps at 14 by 21 centimeters—a modest format suited to a series meant to be read against its companions. The publisher is Hartmann Books; the edition is in English, with text by Peter Bialobrzeski.

Within that series the book gains from comparison: set beside the volumes made in New York, Istanbul and Vilnius in the same period, the same eye meets very different material. Bialobrzeski’s standing—two World Press Photo Awards and the Dr. Erich Salomon Award from the German Photographic Society—gives the project weight, but this volume earns attention on its own terms: a disciplined week’s work, tightly edited and carefully made.
