The Same Sky

The Same Sky

Hardcover, faux leather with tipped-in image and foil stamping hardcover English 292 pages 24 × 30

Description

The Same Sky brings together Ute Mahler’s fashion photographs from 1975 to 1994. Published by Hartmann Books in 2026, this English-language volume considers the work of the long-standing Sibylle photographer through her attention to people and their faces. Fashion provides the setting, but the individual wearing the clothes remains central. The book offers a sustained view of this part of Mahler’s practice, bringing photographs originally made for magazines and advertising into a different context.

Mahler used fashion photography as a space for staging ideas and imagined situations alongside her documentary work. Yet the resulting images often appear spontaneous: a gesture, expression or encounter can seem to have been found rather than arranged. Removed from their original commercial setting, the pictures invite comparison with documentary photographs. This tension between deliberate staging and an apparently unguarded moment gives readers a way to look beyond the garments and consider the people within the frame.

Annett Gröschner contributes a personal essay about her relationship with Mahler and her photographs. Texts by Mahler and Johanna Eckhardt place the work within its biographical, historical and cultural circumstances, discussing the photographer’s career, the history of Sibylle and the magazine’s editorial outlook. Together, these contributions connect the images to the context in which they were made without treating fashion as an isolated subject.

Designed by Lamm&Kirch, the book contains 292 pages and 173 illustrations in a 24 × 30 cm format. Its hardcover uses faux leather, a tipped-in image and foil stamping. The combination of photographs and contextual writing makes it relevant to readers interested in portraiture, fashion imagery and the relationship between staged and documentary photography. This record describes the English edition, ISBN 9783960701507; the publisher also offers a German edition titled Derselbe Himmel.
