Swamp brings together work by Chloe Sells that began as traditional photographs made with a large-format camera in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, and was later transformed in her London darkroom through light manipulation, spontaneous experimentation, and alchemy. Sells describes her unconventional work as “drawings in photographs.” The book presents a selection of these unique, technicolour, dreamlike images.
The Okavango Delta provides the initial subject, while the darkroom process reshapes the images from their photographic starting point. Across 136 pages, the sequence foregrounds colour, light, and transformation rather than conventional nature or travel photography. GOST Books issued Swamp in 2016 as Sells’s first book, in a hardback with a silk-screened cover.
The publication combines a specific landscape subject with an experimental darkroom practice. Its title refers to the swamp terrain that initiated the project, and the book’s design presents the images as a coherent body of work.
