Architecture + Beauty

Architecture + Beauty

Hardback clothbound foil debossed hardcover English 132 pages

Description

John Balsom’s Architecture + Beauty gathers four bodies of work that at first seem to share only their maker’s restlessness. Public diving boards along the New South Wales coast; the cadets of the STS Kruzenshtern, a German-built vessel handed to the Soviet Union as war reparations; the interior of the MV Paul R. Tregurtha, the longest ship operating on the Great Lakes; and the Lusophony Games, a multi-sport gathering for athletes from Portuguese-speaking nations.

Across these subjects Balsom pursues a consistent set of concerns—history, casting, documentary observation, and what he has called “graphicness.” The photographs treat architecture and human presence as mutually defining: structures built for function or ceremony, and the bodies that occupy, train within, or simply wait inside them. The book’s four-part structure lets each series hold its own logic while visual connections emerge between them, from the geometry of a diving platform to the rigging of a tall ship.

GOST Books published the volume in 2022 as a clothbound hardback with foil debossing, 132 pages, in English. It is Balsom’s second monograph. The book was shortlisted for the PHotoESPAÑA Best Photography Book of the Year Award 2022 in the International category.

Balsom’s four series are presented not as a survey but as evidence of a method: an attention to institutional space, human presence, and historical context that crosses national and nautical settings.
