Fugue

Fugue

Hardback clothbound hardcover English 192 pages

Description

Fugue brings together Lydia Goldblatt’s photographs and writing about love and grief, becoming a mother and losing a mother, intimacy and distance. Made over four years and centred on domestic space, it approaches these experiences without offering either an apology or an idealised account of family life.

Goldblatt found herself unable to make photographs after becoming a mother. Following her own mother’s death, she began photographing again, both at home and in the city around her. The work grows from that return to the camera and from her wish to acknowledge difficult feelings alongside affection: claustrophobia and anger as well as intimacy and love. Her account challenges the expectation that these conflicting experiences should remain hidden.

Published by GOST Books in 2024 as a 192-page clothbound hardback, Fugue credits Goldblatt for both its photographs and writing. The combination offers a personal examination of relationships and loss, rooted in the everyday spaces in which those experiences unfold.
