Tomoko Yoneda – An End is a Beginning

Description

An End is a Beginning is a proposition rather than a description. Tomoko Yoneda’s book of that title appeared in 2008, published by the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art — the same institution that mounted the exhibition it accompanied. It is, in other words, a museum catalogue: issued by the museum itself rather than by a trade photobook publisher, and shaped by the occasion it was made to serve.

Yoneda is credited as the photographer, and Toshio Hara is named as a contributor. The volume is a hardcover, with text in Japanese and English, so the photographs and the writing that surrounds them can be read in both languages.

Catalogues of this type occupy an odd position in photography publishing. They are made for an audience that has already walked into a building, distributed in that context, and they tend to slip from view once the exhibition closes. What they preserve is more precise than a monograph and narrower than a retrospective: one show’s selection and structure, with the museum’s own editorial hand behind it. That is what this book holds — the shape of a single project at a single point in Yoneda’s exhibition history.

For a collector, the interest lies in that specificity rather than in any claim about scarcity. The title sets up its own terms: an ending understood as a beginning, a closed event that keeps generating work. A catalogue published by the museum that staged the exhibition carries a different kind of authority from a commercial edition — it is the institution’s own account of what it put on view. Readers who follow Japanese photography of this period, or who collect the printed traces of museum exhibitions, will find here a compact, bilingual document of a particular project, in a hardcover format built to outlast the show.
