Yesterday’s Sandwich II is a continuation of Boris Mikhailov’s iconic series from the late 1960s and 70s, featuring 90 previously unpublished vertical color images. Mikhailov discovered the “sandwich” method by accident when two developed color slides stuck together, creating a complex, layered image that blended disparate realities. This technique allowed him to subvert official Soviet visual orthodoxy by juxtaposing mundane scenes of socialist drudgery with forbidden subjects like nudity, surreal landscapes, and personal fantasies. The resulting tableaux serve as a poignant metaphor for the “Soviet Romanticism” and the inherent duality of life under a restrictive regime. This Super Labo edition includes an essay by Vitaly Patsyukov.
