Borrowed Place, Borrowed Time is the catalogue for Keizo Kitajima’s retrospective at the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum, on view from 29 November 2025 to 18 January 2026. Published by PCT at 360 pages, it accompanies a survey that moves from the photographer’s earliest work to the present, and it takes its title from a phrase that has come to stand for the shape of his career. The editor is Shimoto Hideaki.
The book is not simply a record of the exhibition. It treats “borrowed place, borrowed time” as a conceptual key, using it to re-examine a large and varied body of work and to follow a process rather than to fix a summary. That approach gives the catalogue its own argument: the photographs are arranged so that early and recent work speak to one another, and the phrase becomes a way of thinking about transit, provisional ground, and the conditions under which pictures are made.
Kitajima has long been associated with street photography that tests the terms of its own encounter, and a retrospective of this scale makes the continuities and shifts in that practice legible. The catalogue’s value lies in that long view, and in the editorial decision to let a single phrase organize a career without reducing it to a slogan. For collectors, it is a substantial document of a major Japanese photographer’s retrospective, useful both as a reference to the exhibition and as a book that stands on its own.
This is the official catalogue of the Nagano retrospective, published in 2025.
