NATUR

NATUR

Chinese title: reference translation, not an official Chinese-edition title.

Description

NATUR gathers Michael Schmidt’s black-and-white photographs of the German landscape, made between 1987 and 1997, into a book that treats landscape less as scenery than as a field for testing how photographs produce meaning. The subject is recognisable, but Schmidt’s method resists straightforward description. Light, form and an unusually broad range of silver and grey tones gradually unsettle the apparent stability of what is seen.

Black and white functions here not simply as an aesthetic choice but as a means of neutralising the world and interrupting immediate, subjective response. Schmidt’s photographs do not offer an easy route into place. Instead, their tonal shifts and formal ambiguities ask the viewer to attend to the image as a constructed object—one in which perception is slowed, withheld and made newly uncertain.

That construction continues through the book’s sequence. Schmidt’s editorial process of montage gives the images an interior logic, producing a self-contained world through their linear arrangement. NATUR is therefore not merely an illustrated survey of German terrain; its meaning emerges in the interval between individual pictures and in the pressure exerted by their order. The book form becomes an active part of the work’s language.

Published by MACK in 2014, NATUR appeared only days before Schmidt’s death in Berlin on 24 May of that year. It belongs to the later phase of a practice known for the books Waffenruhe, U-NI-TY, Berlin nach 45 and Lebensmittel, while remaining distinctive in its sustained concentration on landscape, tonal gradation and sequencing. For collectors, its importance lies in the precision with which a familiar subject is transformed into a rigorous investigation of photographic perception and book-making.
