Description

Veramente brings together excerpts from Guido Guidi’s photographic series made from 1959 to the present day, offering a sustained view of the language he developed across four decades. Published by MACK in 2014 to accompany a touring exhibition that opened at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson before travelling to museums in Amsterdam and Ravenna, the book situates Guidi’s work within a broad historical and artistic frame rather than reducing it to a single project or period.

Guidi is recognised here as a pioneer of new Italian landscape photography, but Veramente is concerned with more than landscape as subject. His images emerge from a practice shaped by architectural history, neorealist Italian cinema and conceptual art, and by photography understood as a process of inquiry. The book’s central question is deceptively simple: what does it mean to see, and what might it mean to offer an image to another viewer? Across the selection, that question gives the work its intellectual continuity.

For a serious collector, the book’s value lies in this breadth and concentration. It presents an oeuvre not as a sequence of isolated highlights but as an evolving conversation about perception, place and photographic form. Guidi’s architectural education—including study with figures such as Bruno Zevi and Carlo Scarpa—helps clarify the measured attention to structure and space that informs the work, while the exhibition context underscores the book’s role as a considered account of his practice. At 172 pages, Veramente is a substantial survey in paperback form, and a useful entry point into one of postwar Italy’s most distinctive approaches to the landscape image.
