Description

Published by MACK in 2016, Martin Kollar’s *Provisional Arrangement* examines a world composed of temporary situations and provisional solutions. Its subject is less a particular place than a condition: the weakening of certainties, the collapse of inherited promises, and the awkward forms of life that remain when permanence can no longer be taken for granted. Kollar connects this outlook to his childhood in Czechoslovakia under Communism, where the official promise of “eternity” became, in retrospect, one of his few encounters with the idea itself.

The photographs attend to aborted eternities and slackened certainties—situations in which structures, beliefs, and arrangements appear to be coming apart. Rather than illustrating a political thesis, the work finds the provisional in the texture of ordinary reality. Its force lies in this measured attention: Kollar photographs a world in which ideas once presented as immovable have left behind a void, and in which people improvise their habitation among their remains.

The book’s compact form gives the project a concentrated presence: 72 pages containing 38 colour plates, issued as a hardcover by MACK. For collectors, its importance rests in the clarity of the encounter between Kollar’s personal history and a broader European experience of ideological disillusionment. It also belongs to a sustained photographic practice—Kollar has worked as a photographer and cinematographer, and has published several earlier books—while remaining sharply focused on the unstable present. The result is a restrained, conceptually coherent volume whose subject is provisionality itself, rendered not as an abstraction but as a visible condition of contemporary life.
