Boris Mikhailov: Bücher | Books is a comprehensive exploration of the Ukrainian photographer’s unique approach to the book as a medium. Mikhailov develops his photography in sequences, spaces, and montages, often creating book drafts that exist only as single original copies. This publication presents, in facsimile, two of his most renowned artist’s books: “Krymskaja Fotomanija” (Crimean Photomania) and “Mountains.” These are accompanied by 80 pages of illustrated scholarly text that situates his work within the social and political history of the Ukraine and the decline of the Soviet Union. The volume highlights how Mikhailov captures the “politic in the private,” portraying the everyday lives of ordinary people against the backdrop of systemic collapse.
