Description

Marvel Harris made the portraits in MARVEL over five years, and the book keeps that duration visible. Published by MACK in 2021, it gathers a sustained sequence of self-portraits in which the photographer works through gender transition, mental illness, self-love and acceptance. The project began as an account of transition; Harris has said it became a search for himself as a person with feelings, continuously developing.

What distinguishes the work is its use of photography as a working language rather than a record. Harris, who is autistic, has described the making of these portraits as a way to give form to emotions he had previously struggled to understand, and to connect with the world around him at the time he needed it most. The pictures are therefore both record and instrument — made and remade across the sequence.

The book won the MACK First Book Award in 2021. Beyond that recognition, its subject places it within an ongoing conversation about gender identity and mental health, and it asks for a more tolerant attitude toward trans people and those who do not identify as entirely male or female. The argument is made through the accumulation of one body of work rather than through text.

For collectors, several things reward attention. It is a debut that arrived with an award from its publisher, which gives it a documented place in the recent history of the photobook. The format is deliberate: a debossed hardcover, 140 pages, unusually tall at 24.6 by 37 cm, letting the portraits carry the page. And the five-year span gives the sequence an arc a shorter project could not — a record of change rather than a single moment.
