Description

Mundo de Papel began with an exhibition rather than a book. Published by MACK in 2022, it accompanies Thomas Demand’s solo show at the Centro Botín in Santander, and its 40 pages are built around eight pavilions he designed to hang in the museum, each a paper reconstruction of an urban landscape. The title is not decorative: paper is both subject and apparatus.

Demand is credited as the photographer; Mario Vargas Llosa contributes a newly commissioned text. The volume is bilingual in English and Spanish, hardbound with a die-cut cover, and includes a separate booklet of installation views. What distinguishes it from an ordinary exhibition catalogue is its engineering. Eight large-format pop-ups turn the act of looking into a sequence of unfolding spaces, so that the book participates in the spatial logic of the pavilions rather than merely documenting them.

The book sits at a productive tension in Demand’s practice. His photographs are usually made from constructed paper models, then destroyed or set aside; here the paper model is not only photographed but reconstructed as a reader-operated object. The pop-ups are not illustrations of the exhibition but a second version of it, scaled to the hand. Vargas Llosa’s essay adds a literary voice to a project otherwise rooted in architecture and photography, and the bilingual editing places the book between languages as well as media.

For a collector, the relevant fact is that this is an artist’s book in a limited edition of 1,000 copies, not a standard trade catalogue. Its production values—die-cut cover, large pop-ups, separate booklet—make it a considered object, and its exhibition origin gives it a specific place in Demand’s bibliography. The appeal is not merely rarity, which the publisher documents, but the way the format argues for paper as a medium of spatial thinking. It is a book that asks to be handled, and that is why it holds attention.
