Description
RaMell Ross’s Spell, Time, Practice, American, Body, published by MACK in 2023, is conceived as an expansive reconsideration of the American South. Rather than treating the region as a fixed cultural image, Ross brings together large-format photographs, sculptures, conceptual works, selected films, and writing to examine how the South has been pictured, remembered, and made legible. The result is at once a chronicle of place and an act of imaginative revision: historical evidence is placed beside forms that unsettle inherited meanings.
The book begins with colour photographs made in Hale County, Alabama, Ross’s adoptive home and the setting of his film Hale County This Morning, This Evening. From there, its sequence moves across photographic and mixed-media works and texts that deconstruct and rewrite visual representations of the region. Everyday observation sits beside the strange and symbolic; the familiar landscape is approached through earth, dirt, soil, and land rather than through the polished icons traditionally used to define the South.
At the centre is Return to Origin, a conceptual film work in which Ross freight ships himself inside a four-by-eight-foot box, recalling Henry Brown’s 1849 act of shipping himself to freedom. This gesture concentrates the book’s larger concerns with history, embodiment, confinement, movement, and the possibility of remaking an image from within. Contributions by Ross, Tracy K. Smith, Richard McCabe, and Scott Matthews extend the publication beyond a photographic monograph, giving its visual argument a deliberately plural and discursive form.
For collectors, the book’s distinction lies in this sustained collaboration between image, object, film, and text. Its 252 pages do not simply gather Ross’s work; they construct an active framework for reading it, shifting between documentary record and speculative reimagining. As Ross’s first book, it offers a substantial account of an artistic practice concerned with how American history persists in the present—and how representation might begin to loosen its hold.
