Description

Entre nous is a booklet rather than a survey: forty-eight pages, paperback with flaps, seventeen by twenty-one and a half centimetres, published by MACK in March 2023 and co-published with LE BAL, Paris. It appeared alongside Joanna Piotrowska’s solo exhibition at the gallery, and its texts are in French only.

The publication extends Stable Vices, Piotrowska’s earlier book, with a further series titled Tata. Across both bodies of work she returns to questions that run through her practice — protection and freedom, oppression, the narrow line between domestic safety and domestic threat, between aggression and tenderness. The photographs are not offered as illustrations of a thesis; the booklet’s design keeps them close to writing, so that image and text press against one another.

That writing has a particular cast. Sara De Chiara, Joanna Bednarek and Dorota Masłowska each contribute texts in French translation, and the psychoanalyst Anouchka Grose adds a new essay. Their presence signals what kind of book this is: not a catalogue of captions but an argument conducted in several registers about the ambiguities Piotrowska’s images hold open.

For a collector, the case rests on documentation rather than scarcity. This is the form in which the Tata series first appeared in print, and the form in which a specific exhibition — its selection, its juxtapositions, its French-language framing — survives. It is a modest object, and useful precisely for that: a compact record of a working series and of the conversation around it, made at a moment when both were still in motion.
