Description

MACK’s 2024 edition of Richard Billingham’s Ray’s a Laugh returns to a book first published in 1996, when it was received with enormous acclaim and became one of the most significant photobooks of the turn of the twentieth century. It also belongs to the defining moment of the Young British Artists generation. That history alone would justify attention; the new edition, however, is not a simple reprint.

Billingham’s subject is his parents’ often chaotic home, lived under the heavy effects of alcoholism and poverty. The images are starkly intimate rather than detached, and their closeness is part of their difficulty. The book was produced in the 1990s with editors Michael Collins and Julian Germain. This edition restores Billingham’s original vision for the work for the first time, adding numerous unseen images and a distinct approach to sequencing inflected by his training as a painter. It is, in effect, a director’s cut: 320 pages, debossed linen hardcover, 23.4 x 31 cm.

For a collector, the revised sequence and unseen material are the central point. They alter how a widely known body of work is read, not merely by adding pictures but by changing their order, emphasis and rhythm. The publication also arrives with Ray’s a Laugh: A Reader, edited by Liz Jobey, which traces the book’s history from Billingham’s discovery at Sunderland University through his Turner Prize nomination to the present reworked edition.

Together, the two volumes show how a deeply personal project entered public photographic history and why it continues to challenge viewers. This is not a nostalgic reissue; it is a reconsideration of authorship, memory and the photobook as a constructed narrative. Collectors interested in the development of British photography, in the Young British Artists context, or in the way an artist re-edits a foundational work will find the edition consequential.
