Description

Tee A. Corinne: A forest fire between us is a 2024 MACK paperback of 128 pages, edited by curator Charlotte Flint. It approaches Corinne as a photographer, lesbian sex activist, educator and author, and argues for a practice that was radical and expansive rather than contained by any single role. The book’s 24 x 29 cm format gives room to images and documents drawn from her archive.

The material includes photographs, slides, contact sheets and ephemera, much of it previously unseen. Corinne is placed in the company of friends, fellow artists, writers and activists who helped define radical counterculture, among them Audre Lorde, Joan E. Biren (JEB), Ruth Mountaingrove and Honey Lee Cottrell. Texts by Mountaingrove, JEB and Flint, together with an extensive chronology, anchor the images in specific histories and voices.

At the center are the Feminist Photography Ovulars, annual gatherings of women in the Oregon countryside that Corinne co-organized in the late 1970s and early 1980s. These DIY workshops explored image-making against the natural landscape. The photographs made there describe a community Corinne fostered, and they show how play and pleasure could be pursued as radical acts.

For collectors, the book’s interest lies less in novelty than in method. It brings archival breadth, collaborative testimony and a clear historical frame to a body of work that helped shape lesbian feminist photography. Readers tracking the intersections of photography, activism and community—or the networks around Corinne—will find a considered account of how a visual language around desire was made, shared and remembered.
