Description

Polska Britannica – Special Edition presents Czesław Siegieda’s photographs of the Polish community in Leicestershire, England, made between 1974 and 1981. Born in 1954 to Polish immigrants, Siegieda photographed the world he knew from within: fêtes, funerals, Catholic observances, family gatherings, and the customs through which a displaced community maintained continuity after the upheavals of the Second World War. The photographs are therefore both social record and intimate family history.

Siegieda’s position is central to the book’s character. He moves through communal life with the ease of an insider, attentive to its formal rituals but also to its awkwardness, humour, and private vulnerability. A sharp eye for the absurd coexists with evident affection, while the pictures of his mother, Helena, carry a more exposed emotional charge. Her presence—sometimes physically commanding, sometimes visibly careworn—anchors the broader account in the complicated experience of a generation determined not to attract attention in a country where it still regarded itself as a guest.

The archive remained largely private for decades, its negatives left in a drawer until Siegieda began bringing them forward in 2018, two years after his mother’s death. The resulting book gathers more than 80 images and includes an essay by writer and historian Jane Rogoyska and a foreword by Martin Parr. Published by RRB PhotoBooks in 2020, it gives sustained form to a body of work that might otherwise have remained a personal record.

For collectors, the book’s importance lies in the precision of its viewpoint and the unusual convergence of documentary, diaspora history, and familial intimacy. It does not treat community as spectacle: it records the texture of belonging from inside the household and the congregation. The stated edition comprises 600 copies, with 30 including a signed pigment print; the book itself is identified by ISBN 9781916057524.
