Irish Work

Hardcover English 269 pages

Description

Tom Wood’s *Irish Work* gathers nearly five decades of photographs shaped by an enduring, intimate relationship with Ireland. Published by RRB Photobooks in 2021, the 269-page hardcover brings together more than 200 previously unpublished images, extending Wood’s practice beyond the street photography for which he is best known.

The book is rooted in return: Wood, born in 1951 to a Catholic mother and Protestant father, grew up with a family history marked by emigration and continued to revisit Ireland each year. From his childhood landscape around Nephin mountain to the west of Ireland and the wider terrain of his birthplace, the photographs hold personal memory alongside the country’s more difficult public history. Wood’s long engagement with Merseyside, where he lived from 1978 and worked for twenty-five years, forms an important parallel rather than a separate subject.

Family ties appear throughout the sequence, but they are not explained. Instead, people, places, and landscapes accumulate into a dense field of associations—at once autobiographical and historical. The approach is notably open-ended: the images do not reduce Ireland to documentary illustration or private memoir, but allow those registers to remain entwined. That tension gives the work its particular force, asking the reader to attend to what is visible and to the histories that remain implicit.

For collectors, *Irish Work* deserves attention as a substantial presentation of a less familiar, long-term strand of Wood’s career. Its breadth, the sustained chronology of its subject, and the presence of so many previously unpublished photographs make it an important book for understanding how personal geography, family inheritance, and national conflict have informed his photographic vision.
