Impasse hotel Syria

Hardcover Danish 184 pages 28 × 22 × 2.3 cm 600 g

Description

Krass Clement’s *Impasse hotel Syria* gathers photographs made in Syria in 2001, fifteen years before the book’s 2016 publication by Gyldendal. The images move through Damascus, Palmyra, Aleppo, Homs, and Deir ez-Zur—places whose later histories have radically altered the circumstances in which these photographs are now read. The book therefore carries a distinctive temporal tension: it records a country before the devastating transformation brought by war, while inevitably being encountered in its aftermath.

Clement’s subject is not presented through a declared political program or a catalogue of conflict. Instead, the significance of the work lies in the distance between the photographs’ moment and the knowledge attached to them later. Syria appears as a place observed before catastrophe, and the act of looking becomes attentive to what the images show as well as to what history has made newly visible. This approach gives the book a restrained, elegiac force without reducing its subjects to documentary evidence of destruction.

For collectors, the volume deserves attention as a considered photographic record of several historically resonant Syrian cities, made by a major Scandinavian photographer before their contemporary association with war became unavoidable. Its 184 pages allow the material to be encountered at book length rather than as a small selection of isolated images. The Danish-language hardcover, published in 2016 under the title *Impasse hotel Syria*, is a substantial document of Clement’s engagement with place, memory, and historical dislocation.
