The Dynamic

The Dynamic

Softcover 128 pages

Description

Sebastián Bruno’s The Dynamic is a photographic account of a distinctive local newspaper in Wales, its editors Tony Flatman and Julian Meek, and the community that gathered around their work. Published by RRB PhotoBooks in 2023, the book follows the newspaper through its brief, intense existence, as seen by Bruno, who worked as its staff photographer.

Its subject is both an institution and a moment in recent British history. The paper’s life coincided with years shaped by the rise of fake news, austerity policies, and Brexit—forces that altered public debate while placing particular pressure on local communities and local journalism. Bruno’s photographs, combined with texts and newspaper articles, situate the editors within the social world they represented rather than treating the publication as an isolated design object.

The book’s distinctive quality lies in this layered construction. Images, writing, and archival press material invite the reader into the editors’ working universe and connect the newspaper’s everyday activity to the wider conditions of its time. The result is not simply a portrait of two journalists or a record of one publication, but an examination of how a local paper can register political change at close range.

For collectors, The Dynamic deserves attention as a contemporary photobook that joins documentary photography with the history of local media and community life. Its 128-page first edition, issued as a softcover by RRB PhotoBooks, also records a project presented alongside Bruno’s solo exhibition at the Martin Parr Foundation in 2023. The book’s value rests in the specificity of its testimony: a photographer documenting the people, pressures, and public world of a newspaper from inside its brief history.
