POST SCRIPT

Paperback English 32 pages 15 × 11 × 0.5 cm 104 g

Description

Laura El-Tantawy’s *POST SCRIPT* returns to Cairo’s Tahrir Square five years after Egypt’s momentous revolution. Published by RRB PhotoBooks in 2016, the book does not treat the square simply as a landmark of political history. Its deeper subject is the photographer’s changed relationship to the images made there, and to the event those images once seemed to contain.

In 32 pages, previously unpublished photographs appear alongside El-Tantawy’s written reflections. She moves behind the finished picture to consider the thoughts and emotions that shaped the act of photographing. The result is both a return to a consequential public space and a meditation on photography’s ability to hold memory, uncertainty, and personal implication. Rather than presenting documentary images as self-sufficient evidence, the book makes the photographer’s position part of what must be read.

The publication follows the line of inquiry established in *In the Shadow of the Pyramids*, El-Tantawy’s self-published monograph, while giving that earlier work a more reflective afterlife. Its compact paperback form reinforces the concentrated nature of the project: this is not a comprehensive reconstruction of the revolution, but a deliberate reconsideration of what remains after the immediate force of an event has receded.

Released in connection with the 2016 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize, for which *In the Shadow of the Pyramids* was nominated, *POST SCRIPT* deserves attention as an important companion to El-Tantawy’s practice. For collectors interested in contemporary documentary photography, its distinctive value lies in the shift from public spectacle to the continuing, unsettled work of looking, remembering, and interpreting.
