Benny Profane

Hardcover English 88 pages

Description

Ken Grant’s *Benny Profane* returns to a dockland district on the edge of the River Mersey, a place he first knew as a young labourer. Made between 1989 and 1997, the photographs remain within a compact territory of quays, spillover spaces, the town’s margins, and the broad expanse of Bidston Moss. The resulting book is not a detached survey of an industrial landscape, but a sustained encounter with the people and places that shaped Grant’s early photographic practice.

Its particular force lies in duration. Grant works slowly and deliberately, allowing relationships, routines, hardship, and acts of defiance to emerge through repeated attention rather than through emphatic reportage. The inhabitants are inseparable from the terrain they occupy and from the fragile forms of stability they construct there. Grant’s intimacy is balanced by restraint: the photographs are tender without sentimentality, and attentive to difficulty without reducing the district to a symbol of decline.

The title, borrowed from a character in Thomas Pynchon’s *V.*, introduces a tension between goodness and profanity, moral uncertainty and endurance. It functions less as a literary illustration than as a register for the book’s emotional and ethical complexity. Across the sequence, the landscape and its residents gather meaning gradually, forming a portrait of a community at the end of an industrial era. Bidston Moss ceased operations in 1995 and later became a nature reserve, adding a quiet historical dimension to Grant’s record of the site.

Published by RRB PhotoBooks, this 88-page hardcover Special Edition brings together a body of work of which only a small number of images appeared in *Reportage* magazine in 1991; most had not previously been published. For a serious collector, its importance is the completeness of the encounter: a formative regional study presented as a considered sequence, with the book’s coherence carrying as much weight as any individual photograph.
