Description

Walter Niedermayr: The Aspen Series records the artist’s 2009 response to Aspen, Colorado, extending his long-standing photographic attention to alpine environments from the Alps to the Rocky Mountains. Published by Hatje Cantz Verlag in 2013, the book presents a body of forty-two works made in and around the winter resort: photographs, multipart images, digital murals, banners, and a video work. Its subject is not simply snow-covered scenery, but a landscape shaped by recreation, tourism, architecture, and the systems that make a mountain resort appear both natural and perfectly composed.

Niedermayr approaches Aspen from multiple vantage points, including aerial perspectives, and treats the resort as a sensitive, constructed environment. Snowy slopes, recreation facilities, and polished urban spaces coexist in images that acknowledge the region’s visual allure while keeping its transformation by tourism in view. The mountain is therefore neither untouched wilderness nor mere backdrop. It is an active field in which human presence, commercial fantasy, and ecological fragility become inseparable.

The book’s distinctive force lies in the tension between beauty and scrutiny. Niedermayr’s sequences do not offer a straightforward account of place; they draw attention to the limits of photographic representation and to the ways a picture can organize, distance, or beautify what it shows. The work’s multipart structure and movement between ground-level and elevated views reinforce that instability, making the act of looking part of the subject.

For collectors, this volume is significant as a focused record of Niedermayr’s engagement with a particular resort landscape and as an example of his broader inquiry into alpine space, tourism, and image-making. It also preserves a project that was presented across Aspen’s resort locations through April 2012, giving the publication a documentary dimension alongside its artistic one. The English-language hardcover, issued in 2013, offers a concise account of a major continuing concern in Niedermayr’s practice: how landscapes are remade, and how photography can reveal the process without surrendering their allure.
