Description

Walter Niedermayr’s *Appearances* brings together recent work made largely between 2005 and 2011, with particular emphasis on the artist’s exploration of Iran. Published by Skira in 2011, the 107-page volume presents twenty-seven serial works alongside four video installations, extending Niedermayr’s long investigation of how people inhabit, alter, and perceive mountainous environments.

The book places two fields of inquiry in productive relation. Niedermayr’s sustained attention to Alpine landscapes considers mass tourism, human presence, and the infrastructures built to support them; the Iranian series turns toward a territory where remnants of ancient Persian cultures coexist with a rapidly changing present. The landscape is therefore not treated as a neutral scenic subject. It appears as a layered record in which architecture, historical memory, urban development, and natural forms continually revise one another.

A defining quality of the work is the tension between visual seduction and perceptual uncertainty. The serial photographs, together with the videos, can initially seem spectacular, yet their arrangements complicate straightforward looking and create a measured sense of disorientation. The central question is not simply what a landscape contains, but how an image constructs its appearance—and how human action changes the conditions under which nature is seen.

For collectors, *Appearances* deserves attention as a concentrated account of a significant direction in Niedermayr’s practice: the movement from his established study of Alpine environments toward a broader cultural and geographic inquiry. Its combination of serial photography, moving image, and the historical encounter between Iran’s ancient sites and modern transformation makes the book a substantial record of the artist’s concerns at a pivotal point in his work. The Italian-and-English title reflects its bilingual presentation; the hardcover format measures approximately 28.8 × 24.7 cm.
