Photographs in Growing Up Travelling: The Inside World of Irish Traveller Children explore the daily lives and environments of young members of the Irish Traveller community. The images present intimate and often understated moments that reveal aspects of a culture frequently misunderstood or overlooked.

Jamie Johnson’s approach focuses on candid, close-up portraits and contextual scenes that emphasize the intersection of tradition and childhood experience within a nomadic lifestyle. The mood oscillates between a documentary sensibility and a personal reflection on identity and belonging.

The 96-page volume, published by Kehrer Verlag in 2020, provides an accessible yet nuanced glimpse into the complex social fabric of Irish Traveller children, inviting viewers to engage with their world beyond stereotypes.
