Peter Lindbergh. On Fashion Photography gathers more than 300 photographs made across four decades, presenting fashion as a sustained field of portraiture rather than a succession of seasonal styles. Published by TASCHEN in 2020, the book places Lindbergh’s humanist outlook and cinematic sensibility at the center of his practice. Seduction remains part of these images, but it is frequently complicated by introspection: the person before the camera is allowed to carry as much weight as the clothes.

Two early episodes clarify the terms of that approach. In 1980, Rei Kawakubo invited Lindbergh to photograph a Comme des Garçons campaign with considerable creative freedom. Eight years later, on a Malibu beach, he made the White Shirts series with Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Rachel Williams, Karen Alexander, Tatjana Patitz, and Estelle Lefébure. Its directness helped articulate a changing idea of beauty, grounded less in polished convention than in presence, character, and the relationships formed within the frame.

The breadth of Lindbergh’s fashion world is evident in portraits and collaborations involving figures including Azzedine Alaïa, Giorgio Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Jil Sander, Yohji Yamamoto, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Claudia Schiffer. Actors and musicians—from Charlotte Rampling and Isabelle Huppert to Madonna and Jeanne Moreau—extend the book beyond the customary boundaries of fashion imagery. Across these encounters, Lindbergh’s recurring concern is individuality: his subjects appear not as interchangeable ideals, but as distinct personalities capable of vulnerability, reserve, and strength.

This 440-page hardcover is presented in English, French, and German and includes an updated introduction adapted from a 2016 interview, bringing Lindbergh’s own reflections into dialogue with the photographs.
