Alex Majoli’s Libera Me, Book I, published by Trolley Books in 2010, is a concentrated study of the face as a site of performance, exposure and judgment. The book presents twenty-seven black-and-white portraits in which surrounding context is withheld: only the face remains visible, illuminated from above. This severe formal consistency turns portraiture away from biography and toward a more unsettled inquiry into identity and mortality.
The project takes inspiration from Luigi Pirandello’s play Six Characters in Search of an Author and its proposition that human beings are actors in life. Majoli develops that premise within a larger three-part conception—Persona, Libera Me and Lacrimosa—while Book I is devoted to Persona. Loss, separation, heaven and hell establish its emotional and philosophical field, but the photographs do not illustrate these ideas literally. Instead, theatrical lighting and isolated expressions place each subject between individual presence and assumed role.
Across the sequence, repetition becomes a method of scrutiny. The same restricted vocabulary—face, darkness, overhead light—makes subtle differences in gaze, tension and self-presentation newly consequential. The illumination can suggest revelation as readily as interrogation; its downward source introduces religious associations without fixing the portraits to a single doctrine. Majoli’s approach leaves judgment suspended between photographer, subject and viewer.
At 48 pages and in a large-format hardcover presentation, the publication is concise rather than encyclopedic. Its significance for a photobook collection lies in the close alignment of concept, image-making and serial structure: the book demonstrates how a tightly controlled portrait typology can carry theatrical and existential questions without explanatory excess. Collectors attentive to contemporary portraiture, staged photographic language, or the book as a vehicle for sustained formal argument will find here a disciplined work whose meaning emerges through accumulation.
